A Big Week for Women Behind the Wheel
July is a landmark month for the transport industry, especially for the incredible women powering it forward. From the Women in Trucking Awards in Darwin on 5 July, to the nationwide celebration of National Female Truckies Day the following day, the past week has been all about visibility, recognition, and change.
At Big Wheels Truck Alignment, we’re proud to stand behind these celebrations and support the 2025 Women in Trucking Australia (WiTA) Awards. It’s more than a moment, it’s a movement. One that’s reshaping what trucking looks like and who gets to take the wheel.
A Night to Remember: WiTA Awards 2025
The WiTA Awards night, held on 5 July in Darwin, was a powerful gathering of trailblazers, change-makers, and everyday heroes behind the wheel. From stories of resilience to industry-first achievements, the Darwin Convention Centre was filled to the brim with inspiration, energy, celebration, connection, and a strong sense of community. Big Wheels was proud to support from afar.
Nights like these remind us why it’s so important to elevate and recognise women in this space, not just once a year, but every day. It was incredible to see the phenomenal stories on show:
Alex from River’s Gift was a key speaker, sharing her powerful journey.
Candice, a deaf MC driver, opened up about the challenges and triumphs of earning her license.
Suzette shared her story of driving trucks in the 1960s, long before air conditioning or power steering were standard. A powerful reminder of how far we've all come and the incredible women who paved the way.
This night celebrated the past, present, and future of our industry, from trailblazers like Suzette to today’s leaders making the trucking world more inclusive for drivers of all abilities, while also reminding us how far we’ve come thanks to the incredible women who paved the way.
Why It Matters: The Gender Gap in Trucking
Despite their growing presence, drivers who identify as women account for only 4.4% of truck drivers in Australia and represent only 27.4% of Australia’s transport workforce. That’s in an industry that:
Employs over 246,000 people
Is expecting road freight volumes to rise 77% between 2020 and 2050.
Has a gender pay gap of 15.9%, which is higher than the national average.
Has a worsening truck driver shortage, with over 78,000 unfilled positions projected in 2029
This means growing pressure and growing opportunity.
With driver shortages already challenging operations across the country, closing the gender gap is no longer a nice-to-have; it’s a must. Women bring fresh perspectives, strong safety records, and a workforce-ready mindset. It’s time to turn the wheel in their direction.
Big Wheels: Every Day Is an Opportunity to Do Better
Each of Big Wheels’ 18 workshops across Australia are proud to be Women in Trucking friendly.
From reception to the workshop floor, we’re listening, adapting, and doing the daily work to make our spaces welcoming, respectful, and inclusive. This means:

✅ Facilities that are catered to men, women, and all in-between!
Our commitment to “Steering Australia in the Right Direction” includes steering it toward greater diversity and equality.
More Than a Day
National Female Truckies Day on 6 July is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go.
But real change doesn’t happen in a day. It’s built across workshops, highways, depots, and driver lounges. Every action matters. Every story matters. Every voice matters.

Ich muss sagen, anfangs war ich ja auch etwas skeptisch, als ich von "Driving Change" hörte. Man ist ja doch einiges gewohnt, was solche Initiativen angeht. Aber was hier präsentiert wurde, hat mich wirklich umgehauen. Ich habe "Driving Change" so noch nie gesehen, und das meine ich im allerbesten Sinne. Ich habe definitiv etwas Neues gelernt, und dafür ziehe ich meinen Hut. Es ist wirklich beeindruckend, wie hier Frauen in der Logistikbranche gefeiert werden.
